The Care and Turning of Your Futon
Your futon is compressed and then shipped to you.  To regain its natural loft, remove the plastic and let the futon air for a day.
Your futon will last and last for years to come when it is turned and flipped on a regular basis.   This will insure that it will wear evenly.
Futons love to be aired out to avoid moisture build up.  When making you bed, pull back the covers and let your mattress breathe.
If possible, periodically pull your futon out into the sunshine.
Very seldom does your futon emit any smell at all.  Airing out your futon when it arrives will help dissipate any smell from shipping. Some people detect an "earthy" smell of the raw cotton fiber.
Colored futon covers may have a very slight smell from the dye. These are low impact dyes and this too will go away when aired.

  1. The only mattresses we use!

Posted by Allison S on 19th Nov 2014

We just bought our 5th and 6th futon mattresses on 5 years from Northern Natural--not because they were bad and needed replacing but because they are so good that when we add a new child to the family or buy a new guest bed, we always buy one of these mattresses. We love all 6 of the mattresses....so comfortable and it's good to know that none of us are sleeping on chemicals!

  2. so comfy!

Posted by Jessica on 19th May 2014

We bought my son a twin futon for his first big boy bed, and it is so soft and comfortable with no chemical smell or residue. He loves it, we love it, the dog loves it, it's a very nice futon!

  3. I've been happy so far

Posted by Tony on 25th Apr 2014

In the last 4 years, I've bought three of these standard futons, 1 6" (needed smaller size so it could fold in a tight space) and 2 8". I think the 8" is well worth the extra price - I like the extra padding.

I think they're a good value for a more natural futon. There is a noticeable initial smell, but it does go away. Overall, my family and I have been very satisfied.

  4. affordable and happy

Posted by Ann W., Hansville, WA on 23rd Oct 2013

After 25 years and three futons, it was past time for a new (fourth futon). We simply prefer futons. There are very few futon stores anymore.

So I searched the internet and found two positive prospects (1) a very good but very expensive organic futon and (2) a very good, with carefully sourced, high quality, and affordable futon at Northern Naturals.

While the NN was not organic, I was impressed with the effort to make the futon as green as possible while maintaining its affordability.

The fire retardant is non-toxic boric acid and the futon itself does not out gas and is made with a fabric- foam and layers of cotton poly batting, and they are made in the USA. My experience with Northern Naturals was a refreshing and memorable buying experience.

We love the queen futon. We think it is our best one yet. We've slept splendidly since receiving it in August 2010. Thank you, Northern Naturals. Ann W., Hansville, WA
